Interview with Nancy Zieman

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Nancy Zieman and I at Baby Lock Convention this Summer

I had the opportunity to interview Nancy Zieman this week! It was so much fun. Thank you to everyone who emailed me ideas of questions. You can see the questions and answers below. If you enjoy reading this interview be sure to attend one or both of the Nancy Zieman lectures at the Love of Sewing Retreat next week. Nancy is teaching the Appetizer Reception and Tips N Tricks Presentation January 7th, 6pm – 9pm and the Behind the Scenes on Sewing with Nancy lecture January 8th, 9am -12pm. These lectures are only $20 each or $10 each if you are a Sew Fun member!

Interview with Nancy Zieman:

Q: When did you start sewing?

A: I started sewing when I was 10 and joined a 4H club and I have not stopped since.

Q: How did you get involved in creating your own sewing show?

A: It was a fluke – I was traveling a lot giving seminars promoting Nancy’s Notions. I started Nancy’s Notions in 1979. Then in 1981 someone asked me to do a cable television pilot. At the time cable television was no what it is today and thankfully they had very few viewers at the time. The local producer did not want to produce it. I did not want to produce it myself but I knew that if I didn’t, I may never have another opportunity. I negotiated a 3-month contract, they took a chance and I took chance on producing and the rest is history.

Q: Where do you get inspiration for your new ideas?

A: This is an ongoing process and not from one source. I read blogs and magazines like Real Simple and Martha Stewart Living. I watch the trends that are out there, outside of the sewing market. I also go to publishers and see new books.

Q: What sewing technique have you found the most difficult to master?

A: I am not an intricate quilting piecer, I like to free from art quilt. Different personalities gravitate towards different techniques. That is the beauty of it; we now have Nancy’s Corner at the end of the segment where we interview different artists.  It is so interesting to me to see a variety of personality types that are interested in sewing. College students, architects, men and women making all different things garments, arts quilts, a great diversity of skill levels and interests.

Q: If you had one piece of advice for sewers and quilters, what would it be?

A: Don’t point out your mistakes. Enjoy the process.

Q: What are your favorite time saving tools?

A: The thing I use every time I sew is the 5 in 1 sewing gauge. Very simple but I use that all the time. I have an obsession with scissors, different scissors for different projects, kind of like a cook in the kitchen with knives. The new Stack ‘n Stitch Thread Tower has been fun to design – from conception to seeing it next to my sewing machine, that is the neat part. (To read more about this check out Nancy’s blog post.)

Q: When you are not working what is your favorite type of sewing projects?

A: At home – I basically do landscape quilting.

Q: What was your worst “Blooper”?

A: Oh yeah, I have had lots. One time I could not say Alamagora, New Mexico. It took seven or eight takes.

Q: If you had a crystal ball – what would you predict for the future of sewing? You have seen the world explode with new technology, what do you think sewers will be doing different in 5 years.

A: The world of embroidery will continue to have exponential growth but not all people gravitate towards embroidery. I see a resurgence in the 20-40 year olds sewing in a different way, a very free form non-traditional way. There are not fabric stores or sewing stores that cater to that.

Q: Is there an Ask Nancy sort of website?

A: The best way to ask me a question is via Facebook or my blog.

Q: How do you balance your personal life with such a busy and demanding career?

A: This has always been a challenge, learning to say no. When our youngest son was born, I took great efforts to say no and I have never regretted it. Many times I lose business opportunities but I keep my sanity. Having priorities, doing normal things, volunteering locally, doing things that do not benefit my business. Everybody has to brush their teeth in the morning!

Q: If you were going to be doing something different than your current profession, what would it be?

A: I would like to be the Ambassador to Norway!

I hoped you enjoyed reading this as much as enjoyed interviewing Nancy. I love her tip, “Don’t point out your mistakes. Enjoy the process.” It is so true! What was your favorite part? Be sure to comment and let me know.

Happy Sewing, Carmen

PE Design Next

A photo stitch created in PE Design NEXT

PE Design Next is an easy to use, complete software package that includes: Photo Stitch, Auto digitizing, Digitized fonts plus all the True Type fonts on your computer, Easy editing of existing designs, Resizing with recalculation of stitches, Full manual digitizing tools and much more.  If you already own PE Design Version 5, 6, 7 or 8, the good news is you just need an PE Design Next upgrade to have all the new features of Next.
All these exciting features come in a new easy to use format. All the tools are quickly available at your fingertips through use of the “ribbon” style that is familiar from other software programs.  The important editing windows stay open for easy access – unless you decide to close them for even greater work space.  There are 10 full tutorials to make learning easy.  An included design library provides 500+ designs and a template library includes 225 easy to use templates.
Brother’s Photo Stitch has always been the best in the industry for doing photos as embroidery.  It is very simple to use and creates beautiful results with the click of a mouse.  It also provides sophisticated editing tools for those who would like to use them.
The automatic resizing with accurate recalculation of stitches is a great tool that does a superb job even when adjusting

It is easy to “remove overlaps” when stippling around a design so the stitching does not cover your beautiful design

programmable fills or motif stitches.  Motif and programmable fill stitches are built-in, but if you want one that is not available in the program it is a simple matter to create it yourself using the integrated program.  My personal favorite stitch is the stippling stitch, because my stippling looks perfect when I do it in the embroidery hoop!  The stippling can be varied to nearly any size.  It is also possible to add a motif stitch spaced throughout the stippling for an exciting new look.
100 digitized Fonts.  This includes 5 small text fonts that are digitized to stitch out perfectly at about 1/4”.  All regular & true type fonts can be used in making monograms which work nicely with the included monogram decorations.  There is even a special program (Font Creator) that will actually “digitize” a true type font the way you would if you were manually digitizing it.  With this tool all of the true type can be made to stitch out perfectly.  An outline may be added around any font with just one click on the keyboard. The outline can be one of many different types of stitches.  The fill of the letter may also be changed to many different styles including motifs, programmable fills or even for use as an appliqué.
Auto-digitizing is a quick way to get a great design.  The software digitizes it so you can see how it will look when finished and you still have full editing capabilities to make adjustments as desired.  The powerful editing tools can also be used on designs that come from other sources.  Just how many times have you thought “Oh I would love that design if …” well you can use the editing tools to make it be exactly the way you want it.  Full manual digitizing tools are included in case you want to try your hand at that.
This complete program offers tools for all levels of embroiderers from beginner to advanced commercial digitizing.  All the tools are available in one package.  Stop by your Quality Sewing location for additional information about this excellent program.

Happy Stitching!

Inspirational Show and Tell

Friday, December 17th, 2010

We recently posted a blog about stitchable teddy bears…stuffed bears that are specially designed to be embroidered on. These teddies have been a hot selling item this holiday season.  Gayle, a reader of our blog shared with us her success story with these bears and included pictures of the bears that she stitched for the children in her family.

“I recently purchased 9 of these teddy bears to do for all the kids in the family for Christmas. I wanted to use the 5×7 hoop and make larger pictures plus personalize adding each child’s name. So I did this by removing the stuffing in the head also. Then I hooped everything; stabilizer, bear and topping. They were difficult to get hooped but with patience it can be done and they turned out adorable. I’m anxious now to see the kids open them. Each had a theme – one child played football for the first time this year so his had a football player on it with his team colors, others were soccer players, the two girls are in high school so I put cheerleaders on theirs in their school colors. Great gift ideas!”- Gayle

These bears turned out great, thank you for sharing these pictures with us Gayle! I am sure the kids in her family will be delighted to receive these bears. I love that each teddy has been customized to fit each child’s particular interest. I would have loved to receive a bear with my name on it when I was a little girl!

Do you have any inspirational show and tells you would like to share with our readers? Email us your comments and pictures info@shopqualitysewing.com.

The Limited Edition Laura Ashley NX-2000 Sewing Machine by Brother

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Laura Ashley has always been a name that was connected to excellence and quality in every aspect of fabric and garment or home decoration products.  Brother machines are also known for their excellence and quality, so it was a match made in heaven when Brother began to offer the special Limited Edition Laura Ashley NX-2000 machine for the sewer who desires excellence in their sewing.

The Brother Laura Ashley NX-2000 Sewing Machine is one of the most reliable, easy to use sewing machines in today’s market place.  It has a large opening to facilitate working on quilts, home decor items or even bulky garments.  The AHA (Automatic Height Adjustment) ensures smooth even feeding and perfect stitching even when hemming blue jeans.  The lift and pivot feature with the automatic presser foot lifter makes many difficult projects so much easier to complete.  A large extension table and presser foot knee lifter are included for handling bulky projects.

There are hundreds of utility and decorative stitches included on the machine including hand quilting, joining, heirloom, finishing and many more. It also comes with a CD that has 30 spectacular additional stitches.  And it has the My Custom Stitch Feature© that provides the ability to create ANY stitch desired!

Perfect 1-step buttonholes are a must for garment sewers.  12 different buttonhole styles, in most sizes can be achieved by simply inserting the button into the buttonhole foot and letting the machine do the work of creating the perfect sized buttonhole (it even includes the necessary “ease” for the button to slide through properly)!

The three alphabet fonts in upper and lower case stitch out beautifully.  These could be used for quilt labels, name tags in jackets or to personalize any item…Wouldn’t it be fun to stitch “I love you” in a garment hem or facing, just for the recipient to be reminded of your love?

The Laura Ashley NX-2000 machine comes with a wonderful assortment of 14 accessory feet.  It also comes with the bobbin work bobbin case for sewing with heavy decorative threads.  There are even some patterns to help you get started with bobbin work.  The circular stitch bundle with the ability to stitch perfect circles from 30mm to 130mm in diameter while using most decorative stitches is included.  Circles are so very popular right now and it is great to be able to stitch them perfectly each time.  The adjustable braiding foot and the 3 cord cording feet are included with the circular stitch bundle for even greater versatility.

It has intuitive screen navigation with clear pictures of the stitches as you select them. It has the ability to put any utility stitch setting into memory to save forever or until your needs change, then it can be easily “reset” or changed to something different.  This is a huge time saver when trying to get that perfect needle and stitch setting.

Now is a great time to drop by your nearest Quality Sewing Center to see a demonstration on the AHA, perfect buttonholes and all the included items that come with the Limited Addition Laura Ashley NX-2000 machine from Brother.

Happy Stitching!

Vacuum Survival Tips for the Holidays

Friday, December 10th, 2010

It’s that time of year that we are all scurrying around trying to clean our houses before company comes over! It’s work enough preparing to entertain, but when your vacuum doesn’t work right, it is even harder. Your vacuum cleaner is an important tool to keep your carpets and floors clean. With the holidays coming, your vacuum will be put to the test. The holidays bring an abundance of dirt, soil, food, pet hair, leaves and pine needles into your home. While we can’t prevent the mess, we can prepare our vacuum for it!

Tips on readying your vacuum:
1. Change all the filters.
Even if your filters say they can be washed, don’t…replace them instead. Dirt and water make mud and create mildew. Clean filters create better air flow and reduce particulates including the added pollen that a live Christmas tree will add to the air in your home.
2. Change the belt.
Most vacuum belts are rubber and they stretch out. When your vacuum belt is stretched it does not allow your brush roll
to agitate your carpet fibers and deep clean. The next time you are in the market for a new vacuum, be sure to ask about cleaners with lifetime belts that never stretch, and never require replacement.
3. Clean Your Brush Roll.
Take the time to turn your vacuum upside down and remove hair, ribbon, thread and other items that have become twisted around your brush roll. Try using a pair of scissors to quickly cut away the foreign fibers from your brush roll. If you do this frequently you can often remove all debris from your brush roll without having to take the faceplate off your vacuum!
4. Change the bag at least every month.
A fresh vacuum bag keeps odor and mildew from exhausting into your home. Changing the bag regularly also improves the vacuums “vacuum” and allows for the unit to perform at its maximum performance. As your Christmas tree dries out, the extra pine needles will fill your vacuum bag up quicker than normal…if your vacuum smells like a Christmas tree, it’s time to change the bag!
5. Watch out for what you vacuum up.
Vacuums are designed and built around vacuuming small debris. So if you can see it, pick it up with your hands. Also,
vacuums with hoses are more susceptible to clogging. Pine needles, leaves, wrapping paper and clothing tags can block hoses causing clogs. Pine needles are the usual culprit for clogged vacuums this time of year, while its temping to suck them all up in your vacuum, its a good idea to scoop up as many as you can with your hands and throw them in the garbage before turning your vacuum on!
6. Get your vacuum serviced.
A clean vacuum cleans better. Vacuum service centers experience more service volume the first week of every new year, the reason is clogged vacuums. Pine needles are the # 1 reason for a clog during this time of year. Have your vacuum serviced at Quality Sewing and Vacuum prior to the rush. We will replace the filters, replace the belt, clean and oil the brush roll, completely wipe down the housing and motor. So you can clean throughout the winter into the new year!
