Pinless Pin Weaving

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Do you remember, back in elementary school, how much fun it was weaving construction paper strips together to make a checkerboard placemat?  I always loved that project.  There was something so instantly gratifying to see how the pattern began to form from something so simple.

Later, paper turned into fabric.  Strips of fabrics can so beautifully be transformed into a new textural element for use in a project. Even easier yet, I have found that ribbons of all different widths are perfect to use for this process.

Way back when, when I was first introduce to the concept of “pin weaving” fabric strips, a padded board was needed to actually pin the fabric strips into place while weaving.

Well, I am all about making things easy…

The way I have found that makes pin weaving nice and easy is to use Wet-n-Gone Tacky as a base for the weaving.  This eliminates the need for pins and holds the completed woven areas in place very securely.  Also, it is very easy to handle and work with while adding it into a project.  When all done with your project, simply rinse the stabilizer away.

Here’s how it works…Take a piece of Wet-n-Gone and place it, paper side up, on top of a  gridded cutting mat, you can see the lines of the mat through the stabilizer.  Use these as a guide to help keep your weaving rows straight.

Peel up some of the paper on the edges and tape the stabilizer down to the mat.  Place paper back down onto the stabilizer.

Gather your Ribbons – For this example we will assume that you are using two different colors of ribbons.  But of course, you can use as few or as many colors and widths of ribbon as you wish.  You will want to have enough strips cut of one ribbon (we will call it A) that will cover the area that you want to have woven.  So, if I want to have an area that is 10″ x 12″, I would want to have my ribbon cut into 13″ (or so – gives us a little extra to work with) lengths. I will want to make sure that I have enough of them so that, placed side by side, they will be at lease 11″ (again giving us a little extra).

Repeat the same process for your second color (B) of ribbon. Only this time you will want the strips to be 11″ and

you will need to have enough of them to measure 13″ when side by side.

Prepare your first direction of ribbons (A).
On the end or your stabilizer that you want to begin weaving, fold back one edge of the paper about 2 inches. Using the lines on the mat as a guide, layout one of your ribbon colors (A) side by side in one direction.  To weave, lift every other ribbon (A) and place (weave) your second color (B) through (over/under) the first color.  Continue weaving alternating the ribbons that are lifted up.  This locks the ribbons together and creates a checkerboard pattern.

When you reach an area on the stabilizer that is covered by the paper, peel back a couple more inches to expose the adhesive and then continue weaving.
Once you are done, the tacky nature of the stabilizer will hold your weaving together so it can be stitched into a project and then will wash out when laundered.
Use your woven piece as a fabric piece for appliqué or an accent for what ever project you may   be working on.

The Table runner that is pictured here has multiple colors and widths of ribbons. The woven section was used in the center and has machine embroidered leaves surrounding it and anchoring the outer fabric and the ribbons securely into place.
Hope you have fun with this idea.  Would love to see what you create!

PE Next For Your Business

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Increase your productivity – which increases earning potential, by using the exciting new business features included in the Brother PE Design Next Software program.

One labor saving item is the Link feature.  Link is available when using PE NEXT with the PR 1000 or PR 650. (Free update for the PR 650 and 650C available on Brothers website, this update includes the link capability.) Link lets one computer to manage a combination of up to four PR 1000’s or PR 650’s.  Each machine can be working on a different project.  The computer will receive a status report from each machine and it can send up to 100 designs in queue, so the designs are lined up for the next project.

The View Font Funtion

The View Font function is a favorite of mine!  Many people want a certain font, but they don’t know the name of the font. With this function it is possible to type in the desired word, select fonts and the word will be displayed in every available font including True Types.  Just select the font style that matches the one needed.  Additional digitized fonts have been added for a total of 100 fonts.  The 5 small lettering fonts have been digitized to stitch perfectly at approx ¼”.

An outline in many styles of stitching may be added to any font with one click on the computer. A simple straight stitch or bean stitch outline in a contrasting color will really make the embroidered letters stand-out.  Multiple styles of stitching are available for Font fills too.  One very popular look is using a motif fill to create interest and durability in the stitching.  It is possible to create any desired motif to use as a fill.

"Name Drop" Function

Another big time saver is the “Name Drop” function.  There are 200 design templates included for quick set up.  It is also very simple to set up a name drop template of your own.  Once a design is set-up, select the wording or numbers that need to changed in each design then select “name drop” and a spread sheet will pop up on your computer screen. Type in the names or numbers in order and the software will do the rest.  It will insert the name in the correct size and correct position and save it to a folder in the order it was typed in.  If the list of names is already available in a spreadsheet, that information may be imported directly into the software.  This feature is a gigantic time-saver for those who do personalized items for groups.

We always seem to want to embroider designs that are larger than the hoops that fit our machine. PE NEXT  can divide any design (up to 100cm x 100cm) into segments that match your hoops.  It will insert realignment lines for easy match-up.  A very special 14” x 14” hoop fits the PR 1000.  The software will split a design for this hoop, then use the PR 1000’s Innoveye™ system to magically realign the parts of the design.  There is no thinking, no guessing – there is 100% accuracy!

Seeing is Believing!  You just have to see the magic of the Innoveye™ as it does the realignment for the jumbo hoop.  Drop by Quality Sewing Centers and watch the snowman© perform this new magic.  Your productivity will increase quickly with these new tools.

Happy Stitching!

Anita Goodesign Embroidery Party

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Have you ever been to an Anita Goodesign Embroidery Party? If you haven’t you are missing out on tons of fun! What better place can you imagine than a room filled with beautiful top of the line embroidery machines surrounded with happy and excited sewing & embroidery enthusiasts? All gathered together in one place to learn and be inspired by one of embroidery’s best, Steve Wilson from Anita Goodesign!

In Everett, this past week the Anita Goodesign Embroidery Party was two days of total fun. There were seven projects to enjoy and everyone left with a CD of all the designs used so we can make as many as we like. Of course, all of the projects were great, but a couple of my favorite techniques that we learned were Three-Dimensional Flowers, a Christmas Stocking completely in the hoop, and Shaped Edge Tea Towels.

Steve brings so many wonderful samples for us to see, touch, and be inspired by, every where you look there is something beautiful. He also gave us a sneak peak of the designs that will be coming out in the next few months—they are really neat!

One of my most favorite things about this Party was getting to meet wonderful folks who love to sew just as much as I do. I came away so energized and inspired. Check out the fun we had in the video below:

If you love embroidery or are even just curious about what it is all about. Don’t miss our other upcoming special events!

Looking forward to seeing many of you this week in Puyallup.

3D Flower Centerpiece Fit for a Fancy Tea

Thursday, April 14th, 2011
A friend of mine and I participate in a ladies tea each year.  There is a friendly competition to see who can have the most elaborate and the most beautiful table for 8. Each year we change the color and the flowers.  This year we wanted to do a very colorful table and after I saw the 3D Flowers CD in the 3D Lace Embellishment Kit, we decided to create the centerpiece. Our table was beautiful.  I love the design collection because the creative opportunities are endless. From Lace flowers to jewelry and handbags, the options are fantastic! My friend Nannette has an interest in making hats and has collected antique buttons and flower centers from the 30′s and 40′s.  That’s what you see in the centers of the lacy flowers.  We experimented with the new Heat N Shrink stabilizer from Floriani for the large blue flowers which caused them to crinkle up nicely. We used Hoop Ease and Organdy for the pink and white flowers. We added a little greenery from her yard and what you see in the photo was beautiful.  I look forward to creating many more flowers because I ran out of time and only got to use two the many designs. My friend took this picture for me as she is quite fond of our flowers and tells me she intends to keep them.
Happy Stitching,

How to Guide: Cutwork Needles & Embroidery Designs

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

One of the newer innovations in home embroidery is cutwork needles. These specialty cutting needles along with specifically digitized designs make it possible to create beautiful cutwork or applique projects on your embroidery machine while your machine does all the fabric cutting. No scissors needed- what a treat!

There are needles that are made for Bernina embroidery machines as well as Pfaff, Viking & Inspira needles. The Pfaff, Viking or Inspira needles can be used in any brand and model of embroidery machine as long as your machines thread breakage sensor can be turned off.

Embroidery design packs have been created to be used with these needles. Pfaff, Viking and OESD offer these design packs. Each of these designs are compatible with all embroidery machines, regardless of brand. The size of the design and the size of your hoop is the only limitation. Pfaff offers a fantastic Embroidery Cutwork Needle Kit, which includes an Inspira Cutwork Needle 4 Pack, a cd with 5 multi-format designs and a multi-purpose needle inserter tool.

Here is what you need to know…

Pfaff, Viking & Inspira Needles are the same as each other and are completely interchangeable. Designs made specifically for these needles will either ask you for “Cutwork Needle#” (on Pfaff Creative Vision and Viking Diamond) or by color on all other machines. They are Color Coded as well as Numbered. Each needle has a cutting blade that is angled in a specific way (the angel is depicted, below, after the color).

Needle 1 is Red:  /
Needle 2 is Yellow:  -
Needle 3 is Green:  \
Needle 4 is Blue:  I

Bernina Needles are unique to themselves. Designs made specifically for these needles will tell you which needle position to use and are usually used in order 1, 2 , 3, 4. On machines other than Bernina, refer to the stitching instructions and put in the cutwork needles when requested. There is only one needle, it is attached to a wheel that you dial to switch the angle of the blade (Each blade position is numbered from 1 to 4, the angle is depicted below, after the needle number).
Position 1:  I
Postition 2:  /
Position 3:  -
Position 4:  \

Let me know if you have any questions!

PE Design Next

A photo stitch created in PE Design NEXT

PE Design Next is an easy to use, complete software package that includes: Photo Stitch, Auto digitizing, Digitized fonts plus all the True Type fonts on your computer, Easy editing of existing designs, Resizing with recalculation of stitches, Full manual digitizing tools and much more.  If you already own PE Design Version 5, 6, 7 or 8, the good news is you just need an PE Design Next upgrade to have all the new features of Next.
All these exciting features come in a new easy to use format. All the tools are quickly available at your fingertips through use of the “ribbon” style that is familiar from other software programs.  The important editing windows stay open for easy access – unless you decide to close them for even greater work space.  There are 10 full tutorials to make learning easy.  An included design library provides 500+ designs and a template library includes 225 easy to use templates.
Brother’s Photo Stitch has always been the best in the industry for doing photos as embroidery.  It is very simple to use and creates beautiful results with the click of a mouse.  It also provides sophisticated editing tools for those who would like to use them.
The automatic resizing with accurate recalculation of stitches is a great tool that does a superb job even when adjusting

It is easy to “remove overlaps” when stippling around a design so the stitching does not cover your beautiful design

programmable fills or motif stitches.  Motif and programmable fill stitches are built-in, but if you want one that is not available in the program it is a simple matter to create it yourself using the integrated program.  My personal favorite stitch is the stippling stitch, because my stippling looks perfect when I do it in the embroidery hoop!  The stippling can be varied to nearly any size.  It is also possible to add a motif stitch spaced throughout the stippling for an exciting new look.
100 digitized Fonts.  This includes 5 small text fonts that are digitized to stitch out perfectly at about 1/4”.  All regular & true type fonts can be used in making monograms which work nicely with the included monogram decorations.  There is even a special program (Font Creator) that will actually “digitize” a true type font the way you would if you were manually digitizing it.  With this tool all of the true type can be made to stitch out perfectly.  An outline may be added around any font with just one click on the keyboard. The outline can be one of many different types of stitches.  The fill of the letter may also be changed to many different styles including motifs, programmable fills or even for use as an appliqué.
Auto-digitizing is a quick way to get a great design.  The software digitizes it so you can see how it will look when finished and you still have full editing capabilities to make adjustments as desired.  The powerful editing tools can also be used on designs that come from other sources.  Just how many times have you thought “Oh I would love that design if …” well you can use the editing tools to make it be exactly the way you want it.  Full manual digitizing tools are included in case you want to try your hand at that.
This complete program offers tools for all levels of embroiderers from beginner to advanced commercial digitizing.  All the tools are available in one package.  Stop by your Quality Sewing location for additional information about this excellent program.

Happy Stitching!

Inspirational Show and Tell

Friday, December 17th, 2010

We recently posted a blog about stitchable teddy bears…stuffed bears that are specially designed to be embroidered on. These teddies have been a hot selling item this holiday season.  Gayle, a reader of our blog shared with us her success story with these bears and included pictures of the bears that she stitched for the children in her family.

“I recently purchased 9 of these teddy bears to do for all the kids in the family for Christmas. I wanted to use the 5×7 hoop and make larger pictures plus personalize adding each child’s name. So I did this by removing the stuffing in the head also. Then I hooped everything; stabilizer, bear and topping. They were difficult to get hooped but with patience it can be done and they turned out adorable. I’m anxious now to see the kids open them. Each had a theme – one child played football for the first time this year so his had a football player on it with his team colors, others were soccer players, the two girls are in high school so I put cheerleaders on theirs in their school colors. Great gift ideas!”- Gayle

These bears turned out great, thank you for sharing these pictures with us Gayle! I am sure the kids in her family will be delighted to receive these bears. I love that each teddy has been customized to fit each child’s particular interest. I would have loved to receive a bear with my name on it when I was a little girl!

Do you have any inspirational show and tells you would like to share with our readers? Email us your comments and pictures info@shopqualitysewing.com.

Happy Sewing,
