I was watching a rebroadcast of a Fons and Porter Love of Quilting show (Episode 1506: Garden Fresh) recently. Currently this episode is available to watch only on Public Television. The guest on the show was Gail Kessler, who designs fabrics for Andover Fabrics.

It was very interesting to hear how the designing of fabric is approached. One thing that I found very fascinating is that when Andover creates a panel, it consistently has a 24″ repeat. This being the case, the repeat of each panel must fill the area (selvage to selvage and the full 24″) and elements in a panel are not always symmetrical. Gail’s tip for using elements (or cheater blocks) from a panel is to trim them so that they are visually pleasing and not necessarily exact by measurement.

Herself a quilter, another thing that Gail strives for when she is designing a border print fabric is to give each 4 full repeats of the striped border across the yardage. This way only one modest length of the fabric is needed to be purchased in order to create all of the borders on the quilt. Don’t you agree that it is very frustrating to need to purchase a great amount of yardage in order to get the proper amount of a border strip to complete your project?

Since the show was originally from April of 2010, the likelihood that this same fabric would still be available to purchase is probably pretty slim. However, the free pattern, Garden Fresh, from Fons and Porter is a real keeper!

Did you know that KBTC is a great resource for sewing and quilting? KBTC airs many programs that focus on sewing techniques and projects. In fact, two new shows recently started airing: It’s Sew Easy and Sew it All.

KBTC Sewing Shows and Recent Pledge Drive

Quality Sewing employees and Sew Fun consultants answered the phone.

Do you watch the sewing shows on KBTC? They have a wonderful flight of sewing & quilting related sewing shows each Friday and Saturday morning. We are so lucky to have so many great sewing shows playing in our area! Many communities are lucky to have 1 or 2 sewing shows that play weekly and we have 8 different shows that play weekly. Thank you KBTC! Quality Sewing & Vacuum recently participated in the KBTC Pledge Drive. Many of our Sew Fun educators and staff answered  phones and took pledges! With the help of Baby Lock, our joint sponsor, we gave away two different Baby Lock machines (Baby Lock Sofia 2 & Baby Lock Eclipse DX serger) and tickets to the Nancy Zieman Love of Sewing Retreat on Jan 6, 7 & 8th at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Plus everyone who pledged $35 or more received a ticket to the Northwest Quilt Craft & Sewing Festival and  a Quality Sewing Gift Card. Thank you to everyone who pledged and helped support public television and the sewing shows.

KBTC, Comcast Channel 12 airs a wonderful flight of sewing and quilting shows that broadcast every Friday and Saturday morning. The current schedule is below:

KBTC Pledge Drive This Saturday!

Be sure to watch KBTC this Saturday morning October 9th from 9am to Noon. Not only will you see the wonderful flight of sewing and quilting shows that broadcast every Saturday, but you will see many Quality Sewing Sew Fun educators and staff answering the phones during the annual pledge drive. Before you say, “pledge drive, I don’t want to sit through that”, listen to what we are doing to help support sewing programs in the Great Northwest:

KBTC Pledge Drive a Huge Success

First of all, to all of you who donated to KBTC on Saturday during the pledge drive – THANK YOU!!! We surpassed our goal and raised over $20,000. It was a great day and one of the most successful on air pledge drives ever! All of us from Quality Sewing & Vacuum Centers had a great time answering phones and taking pledges. Thank you for your generous donations.

If you don’t know about the sewing shows on KBTC, you should check them out. Every Saturday morning from 8am- 12:30pm, KBTC airs nine different sewing and quilting programs. We are so lucky to live in the Puget Sound where we get this great programming. In many cities across the country they only get a few shows at some obscure time of the day. Quality Sewing & Vacuum Centers has always felt that this programming is a benefit for the sewing, quilting and crafting community and we have underwritten these shows for many years.

Last Saturday many of the Quality Sewing management team, including myself, volunteered at the KBTC pledge drive. We pitched in and answered phones, taking pledges and giving interviews. How many of you saw me? I was so nervous, I felt like a deer in headlights but it was fun anyway.

Plus, in conjunction with Brother our new joint sponsor, we are gave away two Brother Innovis 900D Sewing & Embroidery Machines. Paul did a great job showing off these awesome machines at each break. He is pictured above with Jane Moxey from KBTC. Everyone who pledged was entered into the drawing.

One machine went the drawing winner, Jannice Gubser. The other machine went to Susan Harmon (photo left) for the highest pledge on Saturday morning. We also gave away Sew Fun Memberships and Quality Sewing 25th Year Anniversary Sweatshirts for people who met certain pledge levels. It was a fun day and it is great to know that we are helping keep sewing and quilting programs on air in the Puget Sound.
