Daylight Company

FAQs

What is the Daylight Company?

The Daylight Company is a UK-based manufacturer specializing in high-CRI lighting designed for detail work like sewing, embroidery, quilting, and crafting. Their lamps simulate natural daylight color temperature (typically 6,000K), which makes it easier to see true fabric colors and fine details. Daylight makes floor lamps, table lamps, clip-on lamps, magnifying lamps, and light pads. Browse our full range of sewing room lighting in our Lighting collection.

What is CRI and why does it matter for sewing?

CRI (Color Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source shows true colors, on a scale from 0 to 100. Natural sunlight is 100. Most Daylight Company lamps have a CRI of 85 or higher, which means fabric colors appear closer to how they look outdoors. A low-CRI bulb can make blues and greens look muddy, which leads to thread and fabric mismatches. For sewing, embroidery, and quilting where color accuracy matters, a CRI above 80 is recommended and above 90 is ideal.

Should I get a floor lamp or a table lamp for sewing?

It depends on your workspace setup:

  • Floor lamps work best if your table or cabinet is against a wall or you need the light to reach over the machine from behind. The Slimline 4 Floor Lamp and Electra Floor Lamp have adjustable arms that position light directly over your needle area.
  • Table lamps are better for smaller spaces or if you want the light source closer to your work. The Slimline 4 Table Lamp fits on a desk edge without taking up much surface area.
  • Clip-on lamps like the Smart Clip-On attach directly to your table or cabinet. Zero footprint.

What is a Daylight light pad used for?

A light pad is a thin, backlit LED panel that illuminates fabric and paper from below. Quilters and sewists use them for tracing patterns, checking fabric grain, aligning applique pieces, and inspecting embroidery placement. The Daylight Wafer 3 (20.5" x 29.5") and Wafer 2 are slim, even-lit panels that lay flat on a table. They are also popular for diamond painting, calligraphy, and other paper crafts.

Do I need a magnifying lamp for sewing?

A magnifying lamp is not required, but it makes a noticeable difference for close-up work like hand embroidery, needle threading, and inspecting stitch quality. It combines task lighting and magnification in one fixture, so you are not holding a separate magnifier while sewing. The Daylight Magnificent Pro 3-in-1 works as a floor lamp, table lamp, or clamp lamp with a built-in magnifier. For a portable option, the Halo Go 2 is rechargeable and cordless.
