FAQs

What are AccuQuilt dies and how do they work?

AccuQuilt dies are steel-bladed cutting boards shaped into specific patterns/shapes. You place fabric on the die, slide it through a GO! cutter, and the blades are pressed through the fabric to cut out exact shapes. Each die is designed for a specific shape or set of shapes, from basic squares and triangles to applique designs like animals, letters, and holiday motifs. For more about the full AccuQuilt system including cutters and accessories, see our AccuQuilt collection.

What is the difference between a GO! die and a GO! Qube?

A GO! die cuts a single shape or a small set of related shapes. A GO! Qube is a boxed set of coordinated dies built around a specific finished block size. Each Qube includes standard shapes (like squares, rectangles, half-square triangles, etc.) needed to create multiple block patterns at one consistent size. Individual dies come in larger variety of patterns. Qubes are a faster way to build a starter collection if you focus on one block size.

How do I know which die size I need for my quilt pattern?

AccuQuilt dies are labeled with both the cut size (the size of the piece right off the die) and the finished size (the size after sewing with a standard 1/4" seam allowance). Match the finished size to your pattern requirements. For example, if your pattern calls for 3" finished half-square triangles, look for a die labeled "3" Finished" in that shape. The seam allowance is already built into the cut.

Do AccuQuilt dies wear out?

The steel blades in AccuQuilt dies last a long time under normal use. Most quilters get thousands of cuts before noticing any change in performance. When cuts start to feel incomplete, the issue is usually the cutting mat rather than the die itself. Mats compress over time and should be replaced periodically. Also, keeping dies clean, storing them flat, and avoiding cutting over pins or thick seams will extend blade life.

Can I use AccuQuilt dies for applique?

Yes. AccuQuilt makes a large selection of applique-specific dies, from simple shapes like circles and hearts to detailed designs like flowers, animals, and holiday figures. Many quilters fuse fabric to a stabilizer or fusible web before cutting, and the die cuts cleanly through both layers. This produces ready-to-press applique pieces with smooth, consistent edges that would be difficult to achieve cutting by hand.
