FAQs

What is Madeira thread?

Madeira is a German thread manufacturer with over 100 years of experience producing threads for embroidery, quilting, sewing, and serging. Their thread lines are used in both home and commercial settings. Madeira is known for consistent dye quality, color range, and specialized threads engineered for specific machine types and techniques.

What are the different Madeira thread lines?

Madeira organizes their thread by intended use:

  • Rayon (Classic, Polyneon): 40wt embroidery thread with a high sheen. Rayon has a softer drape and more luster than polyester. Polyneon is the polyester alternative with similar shine but better colorfastness.
  • AeroQuilt: A longarm and machine quilting thread on large cones. Available in solid and variegated colors. Popular for longarm quilters who need bulk yardage. See the AeroQuilt Value Pack.
  • Aerofil: All-purpose sewing thread for piecing and general construction. The Aerofil Quilt Box (63 spools) is a popular starter set.
  • Aerolock: Serger and coverstitch thread designed for high-speed overlock machines. Sold on mini-king cones. The Aerolock Mini-King Box includes a range of colors.

Can I use Madeira thread in my home sewing machine?

Yes. Madeira threads work with all standard home sewing, embroidery, and serger machines. Rayon and Polyneon 40wt threads fit standard embroidery machine tension settings. Aerofil works in any sewing machine for piecing and construction. Aerolock is made for sergers and coverstitch machines. AeroQuilt on cones works with longarms and can also be used on home machines with a cone holder or thread stand.

What is the difference between Madeira Rayon and Polyester embroidery thread?

Rayon has a deeper sheen, softer hand, and richer color saturation. It looks premium on finished embroidery. However, rayon is not colorfast in chlorine bleach and can fade with prolonged sun exposure. Polyester (Polyneon) has nearly the same shine as rayon but holds up better to washing, bleach, and UV light. For items that will be laundered frequently (children's clothing, kitchen textiles, uniforms), polyester is the safer choice. For display pieces, wall hangings, and decorative projects, rayon gives a richer finish.

What Madeira thread should I use for quilting?

For machine quilting on a domestic machine, Aerofil in 50wt is a good all-purpose piecing and quilting thread. For longarm quilting or decorative machine quilting where you want the stitching to stand out, AeroQuilt is purpose-built for that. It comes on large cones for extended quilting sessions and is available in variegated and solid color value packs. For an all-in-one starter set, the Madeira 18 Spool Thread Kit covers the most common colors.
