The nutcracker is a busy-looking figure, so this pattern deliberately keeps the applique shapes plain. All the character comes from color placement and the blanket stitching around each piece, not from tricky cutting, which is why it works as a first applique project. The technique is traditional raw-edge applique: fuse the shapes down, then blanket stitch the edges by machine or by hand.
