FAQs
What is a Baby Lock serger?
A Baby Lock serger is an overlock machine that trims, sews, and finishes seam edges in a single pass. Baby Lock is known for its air threading capabilities that thread the loopers with a puff of air, removing one of the biggest frustrations of traditional sergers.
What is the difference between a Baby Lock serger and a regular sewing machine?
A regular sewing machine uses two threads to stitch fabric together and many can handle a wide range of tasks like installing zippers, creating buttonholes, and sewing decorative stitches. A Baby Lock serger uses up to 8 threads and can simultaneously trim fabric, encase the raw edge, and sew a stretch seam. They do not do standard seams. Sergers work much faster and produce professional garment finishes that a sewing machine cannot replicate. Most garment sewists use both.
Which Baby Lock serger is best for beginners?
The Baby Lock Celebrate is a strong entry point. It is a straightforward 2/3/4 thread serger with with Jet-Air threading, so there are no manual loopers to deal with. For sewists who also want coverstitch capability, the Baby Lock Splendor combines both functions in one machine.
What is the difference between a serger and a coverstitch machine?
A serger trims and finishes raw edges with an overlock stitch. It works from the edge of the fabric inward. A coverstitch machine creates flexible hems and topstitching on the flat surface of the fabric, producing the same stretch hems found on store-bought T-shirts and activewear. Some Baby Lock models combine both functions:
- Baby Lock Splendor: Full overlock and coverstitch in one machine with air threading.
- Baby Lock Triumph: 8/7/6 thread serging with overlock and coverstitch modes.
What does Jet-Air Threading mean on a Baby Lock serger?
Jet-Air Threading is Baby Lock's looper threading system. Instead of manually guiding thread through the looper paths (which is the most difficult part of setting up a serger), you place the thread in a port and press a lever. Air pushes the thread through the entire path automatically. This kind of feature is available on most Baby Lock sergers. Some models also feature more advanced air threading systems known as RevolutionAir and ExtraordinAir Threading that are even easier to use.
