FAQs

Which Bernina embroidery hoops fit my machine?

Bernina embroidery hoops are model-specific. The hoop connector that attaches to the embroidery module varies between machine generations. Current 7 and 8 Series machines use one system, while older models use a different connector. Check your machine's manual for compatible hoop part numbers, or call (800) 687-5175 with your model number and we can confirm which hoops fit.

What embroidery hoop sizes does Bernina offer?

Bernina hoops range from small (about 4" x 4") to the large oval and maxi hoops (up to 15.7" x 10.2" on some models). Common sizes include:

  • Small hoop: Best for monograms, small motifs, and labels.
  • Medium hoop: The most-used size for standard embroidery projects.
  • Large/Maxi hoop: For big designs, quilt blocks, and all-over patterns with less re-hooping.
  • Oval hoop: Fits awkward shapes better than rectangular hoops, useful for necklines and curved garment areas.

What is a Bernina magnetic embroidery hoop?

Bernina's magnetic hoops use magnets instead of a screw-tightened outer ring to clamp fabric. You lay the fabric over the inner frame and snap the magnetic top plate down. This is faster than traditional hooping, gentler on thick or textured fabrics, and holds material flatter with less distortion. Magnetic hoops are especially useful for items that are hard to hoop traditionally, like finished garments, towels, and quilted pieces.

Can I use Bernina hoops on a Bernette embroidery machine?

No. Bernina and Bernette embroidery machines use different hoop attachment systems. Bernina hoops will not physically connect to a Bernette embroidery module. Bernette machines use their own hoops, and some Bernette models are compatible with hoops from other standard-shank embroidery systems. Check your Bernette model's specifications for compatible hoop options.

How do I get the best results when hooping fabric for Bernina embroidery?

Start with the right stabilizer for your fabric type. Place the stabilizer and fabric together in the hoop, making sure both are smooth and wrinkle-free. Tighten the hoop screw so the fabric is taut like a drum but not stretched or distorted. Use the smallest hoop that fits your design for the best stitch quality. A smaller hoop holds fabric more securely than a large hoop with excess space. For slippery or stretchy fabrics, use a temporary spray adhesive between the stabilizer and fabric before hooping.
