FAQs
How do I know which embroidery hoop fits my Brother machine?
Brother embroidery hoops are model-specific. Hoops from one machine family will not fit another, even if the dimensions look similar. The connection mechanism between the hoop and the machine's carriage varies by model. Check your machine's manual for compatible hoop part numbers, or search by your model number on each product listing. If you are unsure, call (800) 687-5175 with your machine model and we can confirm which hoops fit.
What size embroidery hoop should I use?
Use the smallest hoop that fits your design. A smaller hoop holds the fabric more taut and produces cleaner stitches with less puckering. Most Brother machines come with a medium hoop (4" x 4" or 5" x 7"). Larger hoops (up to 10.25" x 16" on some models) are needed for big designs, quilt blocks, and all-over patterns. If your design is smaller than 4" x 4", use the small hoop for the best result.
What is the difference between standard hoops and magnetic hoops?
Standard hoops use an inner and outer ring with a tightening screw. You sandwich the fabric and stabilizer between the rings and tighten. Magnetic hoops use magnets to clamp the fabric flat against a metal frame. Magnetic hoops are faster to load, easier on thick fabrics, and hold material flatter with less distortion. They are especially useful for items that are hard to hoop traditionally, like finished garments, towels, and bags.
Can I use Brother hoops for cap and hat embroidery?
Yes, but you need a dedicated cap frame designed for your specific Brother model. Cap frames curve the fabric around a cylindrical form that matches the shape of a hat bill. They are available for both single-needle and multi-needle machines. Standard flat hoops will not work for caps. Check your model's compatibility before purchasing a cap frame.
Do I need extra hoops beyond what comes with my machine?
The included hoop covers most projects, but additional sizes save time and expand what you can embroider. Having multiple hoops means less re-hooping between designs of different sizes. A larger hoop opens up bigger designs, monograms, and quilt blocks. A smaller hoop improves stitch quality on small designs like labels and patches. If you embroider frequently, a set of 2 to 3 sizes is a practical investment. Browse our full embroidery hoops collection for all brands and sizes.
