FAQs

What is Dritz?

Dritz is one of the oldest and most recognized sewing notions brands in the United States. They make a wide range of everyday sewing supplies including pins, elastic, seam sealants, marking tools, and pressing accessories. Dritz products are staples in most sewing rooms and are designed for general garment sewing, quilting, and crafting.

What is Fray Check and how do I use it?

Dritz Fray Check is a clear liquid seam sealant that prevents fabric edges from fraying. Apply a thin line along a raw edge, seam allowance, or buttonhole, and let it dry completely. It dries flexible and clear. Common uses include:

  • Buttonholes: Apply before cutting open to prevent threads from unraveling.
  • Ribbon and trim ends: Seal cut edges so they don't fray over time.
  • Seam repairs: Stop a pulled thread or small tear from spreading.
  • Raw fabric edges: Seal edges on fabric that will not be hemmed or finished.

Let it dry fully before washing. Fray Check is permanent and washable once set.

What are curved basting pins used for?

Dritz Curved Basting Pins are safety pins with a slight curve that makes them easier to push through multiple layers of fabric. Quilters use them to pin-baste a quilt sandwich (quilt top, batting, and backing) before quilting. The curved shape lets you scoop through the layers and close the pin without lifting the quilt off the table. They are faster and more ergonomic than straight pins for this purpose.

Can I use Fray Check on any fabric?

Fray Check works on most natural and synthetic fabrics. Test on a scrap first, especially with delicate or light-colored fabrics. On very sheer materials it can leave a slightly stiff spot. On some silks or satins it may darken the fabric. It works well on cotton, polyester, nylon, linen, and most blends. Avoid using it on fabrics that will be dry cleaned, as the solvents can dissolve the sealant.
