The Bernina Buttonhole Foot #3 is designed for sewing buttonholes and for gathering with cord or elastic (smocking). Grooves in the sole allow the foot to glide smoothly over the dense stitch formations that buttonholes produce, keeping the fabric feeding evenly from start to finish.

Buttonholes and Smocking

For buttonhole work, this foot produces clean, consistent results on most fabric types. For smocking, thread cord or elastic through the groove and sew. The cord is stitched over and gathered as you sew, creating the characteristic smocked texture. This foot pairs well with the buttonhole cutter and button sew-on foot for a complete buttonhole setup.
