Tools for Successful Freemotion Rulerwork

Have you been caught up in the whirlwind of freemotion quilting? If not, jump on in!

Let's start at the beginning: What is free-motion quilting? This style of quilting involves disengaging the machine's feed dogs and using a quilting foot that floats above the fabric surface. Instead of the machine feeding the fabric, you move the fabric in whichever direction you want. This is perfect for standard freemotion, Art quilting or even ruler work.

Keys to Successful Freemotion Results

  • Expect to practice first
  • Run your machine at a moderate speed
  • Maintaining the same stitch length throughout the project by coordinating the movement of the fabric with the machine's speed (I do this by singing "Row Row Your Boat" in my head)
  • Once you get the feel of it, draw some lines/patterns on your fabric to follow

Thankfully freemotion is easier than ever with so many machines that have the ability to regulate the machine speed to match your movement of the fabric. This is called Stitch Regulation.
