FAQs

What is the difference between a serger and a coverlock machine?

A serger trims, encloses, and finishes seam edges in one pass. A coverlock machine creates the double-needle hems you see on T-shirts and activewear, formed by parallel lines of stitching on top and a looper thread covering on the bottom. Combination machines can be set up for both functions. The Amber Air S 600 is Viking's combination serger and coverlock machine. If you only need seam finishing and overlocking, a standard serger like the Amber Air S 400 is a better fit.

What is air threading and which Viking sergers have it?

Air threading uses a burst of air to push the thread through the loopers automatically, replacing the manual threading that makes traditional sergers frustrating to set up. The Amber Air S 600 and Amber Air S 400 both feature air threading. The Huskylock S21 and Amber S 100 use conventional threading.

Do I need a serger if I already have a sewing machine?

A sewing machine is not a substitute for a serger and vice versa. Sergers create professional seam finishes, prevent fraying, and sew stretchy seams for knit fabrics much faster than a sewing machine can. Most garment sewists use both. If you sew clothing, home decor with finished edges, or work with knits regularly, a serger will save time and produce cleaner results. Browse all brands in our full serger collection.

Are Viking serger feet interchangeable with Viking sewing machine feet?

No. Viking serger feet and sewing machine feet use different shank systems and are not interchangeable. Serger feet are designed for the feed and cutting mechanisms specific to overlock machines. Check out our Viking feet and accessories page if you're looking for sewing machine feet.

Does Quality Sewing offer financing and classes for Viking sergers?

Yes. 0% interest financing through Synchrony is available on qualifying purchases. We also offer serger classes to help you learn your machine. Classes cover threading, stitch types, and project techniques. Call (800) 687-5175 or visit any of our Washington state locations for details.
