FAQs

What Bernina longarm models are available?

Bernina's Q-Series includes three throat sizes:

  • Q16 / Q16 PLUS: 16 inches of throat space. Available on a studio frame or as a sit-down model with table.
  • Q20: 20 inches of throat space. Mid-size option for quilters who need more room than the Q16 but less footprint than the Q24.
  • Q24: 24 inches of throat space. The largest Bernina longarm for full-size quilts with minimal rerolling.

All models are also available as sit-down versions with a dedicated quilting table.

What is the Bernina Stitch Regulator (BSR) on longarm machines?

The BSR is a sensor system that automatically adjusts stitch speed to match how fast you move the machine. Move slowly, the needle slows down. Move quickly, it speeds up. The result is consistent stitch length regardless of your hand speed. This is especially valuable for free-motion quilting where maintaining even stitches at variable speeds is one of the hardest skills to master. All Q-Series longarms include BSR.

Can I automate my Bernina longarm with a computerized system?

Yes. The Bernina Q-Matic is an automation system that connects to Q20 and Q24 longarms. It drives the machine through programmed quilting designs, similar to how Pro-Stitcher works on Baby Lock and Handi Quilter longarms. Q-Matic handles edge-to-edge patterns, block-based quilting, and custom layouts. You can also quilt free-motion by hand when you want full creative control, then switch to Q-Matic for repetitive patterns.

What is the difference between a Bernina longarm and a Bernina sit-down quilter?

A longarm on a frame (stand-up) means you stand and move the machine head across a stationary quilt loaded on rollers. You see the full quilt surface from above. A sit-down model (like the Q16 ST or Bernina Q20 on a table) works like a large sewing machine: you sit and guide the quilt under the needle. Sit-down is easier on the body for long sessions. Stand-up gives better visibility and is faster for large quilts. Both use the same machine heads and stitch quality.

Do I need a special frame for a Bernina longarm?

Yes. Bernina longarms mount to Bernina-specific frames. The Q16 uses the Studio Frame, while the Q20 and Q24 use larger dedicated frames sized to match their throat space. Bernina frames are not interchangeable with frames from other longarm brands. Frame length determines the maximum quilt width you can load. Choose your frame size based on the largest quilts you plan to make and the room space you have available. Browse all options in our quilting frames and systems collection.
