FAQs
Do Bernina sergers use air threading?
Yes. Current Bernina L Series sergers feature an air threading system for the loopers. You place the thread in the threading port and press a lever to push the thread through the looper path automatically. Needle threading is still manual but uses a built-in needle threader. The air threading system is one of the biggest time-savers on a serger, since manual looper threading is the most difficult part of setup.
Can I use Bernina serger feet on my Bernina sewing machine?
No. Bernina serger feet and Bernina sewing machine feet use completely different attachment systems. Serger feet are designed for the L Series machines only. Sewing machine feet (numbered feet like #1, #37, #50, etc.) fit the B Series sewing machines only. The two are not interchangeable. Check our Bernina Presser Feet collection and filter by machine type to find the right feet.
What thread works best with Bernina sergers?
Bernina sergers work with standard serger thread on cones in 40wt or 50wt polyester or poly-cotton blends. Sergers use 3 to 4 cones simultaneously, so buying thread on large cones (1,000+ yards) is more economical than standard spools. For decorative serging, you can also use woolly nylon in the loopers for a softer, stretchier finish on knit hems and rolled edges.
Is a Bernina serger worth the investment over other brands?
Bernina sergers are priced higher than most competitors, but they offer Swiss engineering, a metal frame, precise stitch quality, and the air threading system. If you already own a Bernina sewing machine and value the build quality, the L Series serger is a natural fit. For budget-friendly alternatives with air threading, Baby Lock sergers also offer jet-air looper threading at a range of price points.
