FAQs

How do I know which Bernina presser foot I need?

Bernina feet are identified by number (e.g., #1 General Purpose, #37 Patchwork, #50 Zigzag). Your machine's manual lists which feet are included and recommends others for specific techniques. If you know the task (quilting, zipper, binding, etc.), search by that keyword on this page. If you know the foot number, search by number. Not sure? Call (800) 687-5175 and tell us what you are trying to sew.

Are Bernina presser feet interchangeable between models?

Most current Bernina machines (3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 Series) use the same snap-on foot system, so feet are interchangeable across those models. Older Bernina machines manufactured before 2008 may use the old-style shank, which takes different feet. The Bernina L Series sergers use their own separate foot system that is not compatible with sewing machine feet. Check the foot listing for compatibility notes if you have an older model.

What are the most popular Bernina presser feet?

Top sellers beyond what comes with your machine:

  • #50 Zigzag Foot with Guide: Wide opening for decorative stitches and zigzag.
  • #37 / #37D Patchwork Foot: Precise 1/4" seam allowance for quilt piecing. The D version works with Dual Feed.
  • #20 / #20D Open Embroidery Foot: Clear view of stitches for embroidery and applique.
  • #42 Free Motion Couching Foot: Couches yarn, cord, and decorative threads in free-motion patterns.
  • #72 Adjustable Ruler Foot: For ruler-guided quilting with acrylic templates.

What does the "D" mean on Bernina foot numbers?

The "D" suffix (e.g., #37D, #20D) means the foot is designed to work with Bernina's Dual Feed system. Dual Feed feet have a slightly different attachment that engages with the built-in walking foot mechanism. If your Bernina has Dual Feed and you plan to use it, get the D version. If your model does not have Dual Feed, or you will not be using it for that technique, the standard version works fine. Both versions produce the same stitch results when Dual Feed is disengaged.

Can I use generic presser feet on my Bernina?

No. Bernina uses a proprietary snap-on system that is different from the standard low-shank or high-shank systems used by other brands. Generic snap-on feet from Brother, Singer, Janome, or other brands will not attach to a Bernina machine. You must use Bernina-specific feet. This is one reason the Bernina foot collection is so extensive: over 95 feet covering every sewing, quilting, and embroidery technique.
