Bernina's 7 Series (like the 770 QE Plus and 790 Plus) are built for quilting with features like the Bernina Stitch Regulator (BSR), large throat space, and Dual Feed. For dedicated quilting on a frame, the Bernina Q-Series longarm machines (Q16, Q20, Q24) offer 16 to 24 inches of throat space. The 5 Series is a solid mid-range option that handles both quilting and general sewing well.

The Bernina Dual Feed is a built-in walking foot mechanism integrated into the machine. Unlike a separate walking foot attachment, Dual Feed engages and disengages with a lever. It feeds the top and bottom fabric layers at the same speed, preventing shifting on slippery fabrics, knits, quilts, and multiple layers. Dual Feed works with most standard Bernina presser feet, so you don't need to swap to a separate walking foot.

Bernina uses a proprietary snap-on foot system that is different from other brands. Within Bernina, feet are grouped by shank compatibility. Most current Bernina machines (3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 Series) use the same foot system, so feet are interchangeable across those models. Older Bernina machines (pre-2008) may use the old-style shank.
